In the early 1970’s few individuals owning photo studios in the Fort Area of Mumbai, having felt the need to come together, to look into and take care of the interests of people connected to photographic trade, formed a Photographic Dealers Association (PDA). The PDA was born on 21st June, 1973 with a membership of 25 traders. With the growth and activites gradually progressing and entrepreneurs from the Photographic Industry also enrolling as Members of the Association, it was rechristened as All India Photographic Trade & Industry Association (AIPTIA) during the year 1996. Over last over 30 year, the Association showed a steady progress and as at present its membership stands at over 3400 sprawling over the length and breadth of the country.
The Association, in its efforts to promote the profession of photography and bring home the latest technology and modern trends of the world, and also to provide a showcase for the photography products started organizing and conducting exhibitions since 1978 under the title “PhotoFair”. The Association has so far conducted 13 PhotoFair, the last one being the PhotoFair 2008, which was held between March 13 & 16, 2008 at NSE Grounds, Bombay Exhibition Centre, Opp. Western Express Highway, Goregaon (East), Mumbai 400063. It was ranked as the best in Asia and the 3rd best in the World. Exhibits from prominent National & Multinational companies like Kodak, Konica, Fuji Canon, Nikon, Olympus, HP, Epson, Sony and Jindal were on display. The exhibits consist of world-renowned brand names with assortment of their state-of-the-art technology. Photofair 2006 aimed to increase awareness in relevance to the most recent photography inventions and to target the audience in the entire community interested in photography.

During its tenure so far, the Association has crossed many milestones in the interest of its members, among which the following are a few, merit a mention:-
a) Conduct of 13 Fairs, titled “PHOTFAIR”, showcasing the products of the
photographic trade & industry, since last two decades.
b) Representation to the Govt. of India, to reduce the custom duties on photographic
products
c) Representation to the Govt. of India, appealing for abatement of service tax on
Account of input costs of photography services.
d) Representation to the Govt. of Maharashtra, to reduce the Sales Tax under Work
Contract Act.
e) Administrative Relief, under Maharashtra State Works Contract Act, upto 31st
March, 2004
f) Conduct workshops and seminars on Service Tax & Works Contract Tax, for the
benefit of its members, from time to time.
g) Financial help to those photography people who were affected due to
Gujarat Earthquake.

FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROMOTION OF PHOTOGRAPHY DONATIONS WERE GIVEN TO:-
Photo Artist, Shri Gopal Bodhe to bring out a book on aerial photography,
titled “Goa A view from Heavens”.
The Photographic Society of India, to repair and renovate its premises
which were in dilapidated conditions.
Sponsoring cash prizes to various Schools such as J.J. School of Art,
L.S. Raheja School of Art, Rajiv Gandhi Medical Collage and Sophia
Memorial Polytechnic etc., to encourage the meritorious students in photography.
Supporting photography related exhibition, conducted by the members of AIPTIA,
sponsoring Workshop and Seminars.

The association has its own office premises in a prominent place in the Fort area of Mumbai. It has its website www.aiptia.org to cater the members and the Industry & Trade better. The Association has successfully conducted workshops and Seminars in the field of photography, Works Contract Tax Act and Service Tax, bringing in experts to deliver speeches. With these achievements in its stride, the Association marches ahead with a view to target further goals in the interest of its members in general and the Nation in particular.
